How it works

Start from Lesson 1 and work your way up. Each lesson introduces new keys with targeted exercises. Complete all 8 lessons to master touch typing for SSC exams.

What is Touch Typing and Why Learn It?

Touch typing is the ability to type using all ten fingers without looking at the keyboard. Instead of the "hunt-and-peck" method where you search for each key visually, touch typing relies on muscle memory — your fingers automatically know where each key is based on their position relative to the home row.

According to research by Microsoft and the University of Aalto, proficient touch typists achieve speeds of 40 to 80 WPM compared to 27 to 37 WPM for hunt-and-peck typists. More importantly, touch typists make fewer errors because they can keep their eyes on the screen and catch mistakes in real time.

How Our Lesson Structure Works

Our 8-lesson course follows the same proven pedagogy used by TypingClub, Typing.com, and professional typing certification programs. The structure is:

  1. Lessons 1 to 2: Home Row Foundation — You learn the 8 keys where your fingers rest (A, S, D, F, J, K, L, ;) plus the adjacent G and H keys.
  2. Lessons 3 to 4: Vertical Expansion — Your fingers learn to reach up to the top row (QWERTY) and down to the bottom row (ZXCVB) while always returning to home position.
  3. Lesson 5: Numbers — The number row requires the longest finger stretch and is often the weakest area for typists.
  4. Lessons 6 to 7: Modifiers — Capital letters require coordinating the Shift key with the opposite hand. Punctuation marks train your right pinky.
  5. Lesson 8: Full Sentences — Combines all skills into complete SSC-style paragraphs, simulating the actual exam experience.

How Long Does It Take to Learn Touch Typing?

Based on data from typing education platforms, here is a realistic timeline for most learners:

StageDurationExpected SpeedFocus
Week 115 min/day10 to 15 WPMHome row accuracy
Week 2 to 315 min/day15 to 25 WPMAll keyboard rows
Week 4 to 620 min/day25 to 35 WPMSpeed building
Week 7 to 1220 min/day35 to 45 WPMSSC exam readiness

Most SSC CGL candidates need 4 to 6 weeks of daily practice to reach the qualifying speed of 35 WPM. SSC CHSL candidates targeting 30 WPM can achieve this in 3 to 4 weeks.

Why These Lessons Help SSC Exam Candidates

Unlike generic typing courses, our lessons are specifically designed with SSC exam requirements in mind:

  • Exercise texts use SSC-style vocabulary — From the Indian Constitution and government policies to scientific topics that commonly appear in DEST passages.
  • Punctuation is taught separately — SSC DEST counts punctuation errors as half mistakes. Our dedicated punctuation lesson ensures you do not lose marks.
  • Number row included — SSC passages frequently include dates, statistics, and figures. Many typing courses skip number practice entirely.
  • Virtual keyboard guide — Each lesson shows an on-screen keyboard that highlights the correct key and finger.

Frequently Asked Questions

6 questions answered

Are these typing lessons free?
Yes, all 8 typing lessons are completely free with no registration required. You can access every lesson, exercise, and virtual keyboard guide directly in your browser. There are no premium features or paywalls. The lessons will remain free permanently.
Do I need to complete the lessons in order?
We strongly recommend following the lesson order from 1 to 8. Each lesson builds on the skills learned in previous lessons. Lesson 1 (Home Row) establishes the finger positions that all subsequent lessons depend on. If you skip to Lesson 3 (Top Row) without mastering the home row, you will develop incorrect finger habits that are very difficult to fix later. However, if you already know touch typing basics, you can jump directly to lessons covering your weak areas like Numbers (Lesson 5) or Punctuation (Lesson 7).
How are these lessons different from TypingClub or Typing.com?
TypingClub and Typing.com are excellent general-purpose typing tutors. Our lessons are specifically tailored for SSC and government exam candidates. The differences include: (1) Exercise texts use SSC-style vocabulary and topics like Indian Constitution, solar energy, and digital India. (2) We include dedicated number row and punctuation lessons because SSC DEST passages contain dates, figures, and punctuation marks that count as errors. (3) Our lessons connect directly to full SSC typing tests so you can immediately apply what you learn.
What is the home row and why is it important?
The home row is the middle row of letter keys on a QWERTY keyboard: A, S, D, F for the left hand and J, K, L, ; for the right hand. It is important because this is the resting position for your fingers — every keystroke begins and ends here. The F and J keys have small tactile bumps so you can find the home position without looking. Mastering the home row is the single most important step in learning touch typing.
Can I learn touch typing at age 30 or 40?
Absolutely. Touch typing is a motor skill similar to learning to ride a bicycle. While children may learn slightly faster, adults consistently achieve touch typing proficiency within 4 to 8 weeks of regular practice. Many SSC CGL candidates in their late 20s and 30s successfully learn touch typing from scratch and pass the DEST. The key factor is not age but consistent daily practice of 15 to 20 minutes.
Should I focus on speed or accuracy during these lessons?
Always prioritize accuracy over speed, especially in lessons 1 through 4. Typing education research consistently shows that speed is a natural byproduct of accuracy. If you train yourself to hit the correct key every time (even slowly), your speed will increase automatically as muscle memory develops. Aim for 95% accuracy or higher before moving to the next lesson.
