The SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) typing test is conducted for candidates who clear the Tier I examination and are applying for LDC (Lower Division Clerk) and JSA (Junior Secretariat Assistant) posts. A critical detail that many candidates get wrong is the test duration. The SSC CHSL typing test for LDC and JSA posts is 10 minutes, not 15 minutes. This is different from the SSC CGL DEST which runs for 15 minutes.
According to the official SSC CHSL notification published on ssc.nic.in, the speed requirements are clearly defined by language and post type. For LDC and JSA posts: English typing requires 35 Words Per Minute which translates to approximately 10,500 Key Depressions Per Hour. Hindi typing requires 30 Words Per Minute, approximately 9,000 KDPH. These calculations assume an average of 5 key depressions per word.
For DEO (Data Entry Operator) and DEO Grade A posts, the requirements are different. DEO posts require 8,000 Key Depressions Per Hour in a 15-minute test. Some specific department DEO positions require 15,000 KDPH. If you are applying for DEO, make sure you check your specific department requirement in the notification annexure.
The SSC uses the same error classification system for CHSL as it does for CGL. Errors are calculated with precision up to two decimal places. Full mistakes count as 1 error each: word omission, wrong word substitution, word addition, spelling errors (from letter repetition, addition, omission, or substitution), word repetition, and incomplete words.
Half mistakes count as 0.5 error each: spacing errors (no space between words or extra space within words), wrong capitalization (does not apply to Hindi typing), punctuation errors, word transposition, and paragraphic errors (not using Tab key or non-uniform spacing). Many candidates lose marks on half mistakes without even realizing it. Pay special attention to spacing consistency and capitalization during practice.
You must choose your typing language (English or Hindi) at the time of filling the application form. This choice is final and cannot be changed later or on exam day. For English typing, a standard QWERTY keyboard is provided. For Hindi typing, the SSC uses Mangal font (Unicode) and provides keyboard layout options including Remington (Gail) and Inscript on the TCS iON exam platform.
A 2-minute trial test is provided before the actual 10-minute examination begins. Use this trial period wisely. Check that all keys are working, feel the key travel and resistance, and type a few practice sentences to establish your rhythm. Some exam center keyboards have sticky keys or different resistance levels than what you practice on at home.
Since the CHSL test is only 10 minutes (shorter than CGL 15 minutes), you need to be at full typing speed from the very first second. There is no time for a warm-up phase. Practice starting fast by doing drills where you begin typing immediately after seeing the passage. This quick-start ability is what separates candidates who pass from those who fail in a 10-minute window. Take multiple 10-minute tests daily on this platform to build exam-specific endurance and timing.
