The SSC CGL DEST is a qualifying module conducted during the Tier II examination for specific posts under the Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level examination. According to the official notification on ssc.nic.in, the DEST is mandatory only for Tax Assistant posts in CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) and CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs). Many candidates confuse this requirement and assume it applies to all CGL posts, but ASO, UDC, and most other posts do not require DEST qualification.
The test duration is exactly 15 minutes. During this time, you must type a passage of approximately 2000 key depressions. The test is conducted on a computer with a standard QWERTY keyboard at SSC examination centers. Every key you press counts as one depression including alphabets, numbers, spacebar, shift key, enter, and backspace.
The SSC evaluates your performance using two types of error categories. Full mistakes carry a penalty of 1 error each and include: omission of any word or figure, substitution of a wrong word, addition of words not in the passage, spelling errors caused by letter repetition or omission, and incomplete or half-typed words. Half mistakes carry 0.5 error penalty and include: spacing errors (no space between words or extra spaces), wrong capitalization, punctuation errors, word transposition (typing "hope I" instead of "I hope"), and paragraphic errors where you fail to use the Tab key for new paragraphs.
This is something most candidates do not know about. The SSC does not simply check if you typed 2000 key depressions. They calculate your error percentage from the total typed content and compare it against category-wise limits. Unreserved (UR) candidates are allowed up to 20 percent errors. OBC and EWS candidates get slightly more relaxation at 25 percent. SC, ST, and other reserved category candidates are allowed up to 30 percent errors. If your error percentage exceeds your category limit, you are disqualified even if you crossed the 2000 key depression mark.
This practice test replicates the exact SSC CGL DEST environment. You get a 15-minute countdown timer, a passage to read on screen, and a typing area below. The system tracks your Words Per Minute, accuracy percentage, and total keystrokes in real time. After the test, you receive a detailed result showing whether you would have passed or failed based on the 35 WPM threshold.
One important detail that SSC mentions in their instructions: if you complete the passage before 15 minutes are up, do not retype it from the beginning. Instead, use the remaining time to proofread and correct any errors. Retyping increases the chance of additional mistakes without providing any scoring benefit.
Start your preparation at least 4 to 6 weeks before the expected DEST date. In the first two weeks, focus entirely on touch typing fundamentals. Place your fingers on the home row (A, S, D, F for left hand and J, K, L, semicolon for right hand) and practice without looking at the keyboard. Speed does not matter at this stage.
From week three, start taking timed 15-minute tests daily. Track your WPM and error count after each session. Pay special attention to the half-mistake categories because candidates often lose marks on spacing and capitalization errors without realizing it. Make sure you use the Tab key at the start of every paragraph, maintain consistent spacing, and type capital letters exactly as shown in the passage.
By week five and six, you should be consistently hitting 38 to 42 WPM with under 15 percent error rate. This gives you a comfortable buffer. Remember, the DEST is qualifying only and carries no marks toward your final merit. But failing it means losing the post despite clearing Tier I and Tier II. Do not take it lightly, but also do not stress about it. Consistent daily practice is all you need.
